Floral biology and pollination in Brazil: history and possibilities Acta Botanica
Oliveira,Paulo Eugênio; Rech,André Rodrigo.
ABSTRACT Pollination research in Brazil virtually started with Fritz Muller, whose insights supported Darwin's evolutionary theory. Pollination systems of Brazilian plants were studied mainly by travelling researchers until early last century when native or resident geneticists began to use floral biology information to deal with crop acclimatization and breeding, later applying similar experiments and techniques to investigate native plants. Bee geneticists studied common pollinators of crops, such as coffee and Citrus, and even the introduction of feral African honeybees, despite their associated problems, stimulated pollination research. Geneticists attracted Dobzhansky to Brazil, where his research on tree distribution in the Brazilian Amazon...

Use and traditional knowledge of Byrsonima crassifolia and B. coccolobifolia (Malpighiaceae) in a Makuxi community of the Roraima savanna, northern Brazil Acta Amazonica
OLIVEIRA,Rodrigo Leonardo Costa de; SCUDELLER,Veridiana Vizoni; BARBOSA,Reinaldo Imbrozio.
ABSTRACT Byrsonima crassifolia and B. coccolobifolia, popularly known as mirixis, muricis, mantecos or nances, are common fruit species in the Amazonian savannas. Their fruits are used in the preparation of juices and other beverages, while the other parts of the plants are used for different purposes in some indigenous communities. The aim of the present ethnobotanical study was to investigate the knowledge and traditional uses of mirixis in the Darora Indigenous Community, of the Makuxi ethnicity, in the São Marcos Indigenous Land, state of Roraima, northern Brazil. The knowledge on these species among the residents was analyzed considering their gender and age. A survey was carried out by means of semi-structured interviews with 60 respondents (36 men...

สิทธิเกษตรกร: ผลกระทบจากร่างแก้ไขกฎหมายคุ้มครองพันธุ์พืช Thai Agricultural
Somchai Ratanachueskul.
Agriculture has been one of the most important occupations in the Thai society from the past to the present. A considerable number of plant varieties in Thailand are partly derived from the farmers’ path of life and their customs—they exchange seeds and knowledge relating to such varieties. However, under unavoidable international trade and free market paradigm, agriculture businesses led by multinational corporations encourage and support modern agriculture by convincing farmers to cultivate for export using high yield varieties, and limiting farmers’ choice to grow crops. Under these circumstances, the principle factors of farmers’ cultivation, seeds and plant varieties among others, are transformed into private property and protected by an intellectual...
